Treo 700wx must have applications

must have apps are not in any particular order, except the first one!

  • Arcsoft MMC Hack – enable picture mail on the 700wx
  • Weather Panel – I had a few issues with weather panel, but they have put up a nice install and help thread over at Treo Central, if you need some help setting up your panel to look like mine, I have included both the WM5 theme I use and the weatherpanel software and themes here
  • ActiveSync – if you are in an exchange environment this would be way to go, and it’s included for Windows Users
  • Good Messaging – your corporate IT guys have to set this up, but it offers a lot more than the standard Active Sync does…there are also hosted services that allow you to use it or AS
  • Missing Sync for Windows Mobile – a mac user must have syncs your windows device to your mac and gives you most of the features Microsoft intended.
  • Screen Capture Utility – from Microsoft
  • Wisbar Lite/Advance – pretty cool extensions of the OS but too much configuration for me to want to learn
  • Egress – RSSReader
  • Agile Messenger – all-in-one IM client
  • TodayAgenda – Add-on for extending Calendaring on the today screen. The today screen is the point at which you start in Windows Mobile.
  • Installing Java – if you want google mobile maps you must go through this disaster of a process…but it can be done and runs fairly decently, and is a really cool app
  • You must have a midlet manager to run Java apps, here is the best one
  • ListPro – a great todo list/outliner tool
  • PhoneAlarm – awesome control panel that gives you info on missed calls, sms, etc
  • Birthdays – a today screen plug-in to show upcoming birthdays and anniversaries

    Treo 700wx – wait is that a windows device???

    I have made the switch…from and Treo 700p to a Treo 700wx. The windows mobile 5 version of the Palm Treo, and I love it.

    After using the Treo running the PalmOS for 5 years it was time for a change, and this device is the change I needed. I am not a windows fanboy, in fact I use a mac at work and home, but I do support windows (job security). Microsoft has something special here the Windows Mobile 5 devices have a pretty decent OS, but most are missing the simplistic approach to hardware…this is where the Treo comes in.

    In my first 14 days on this device I am impressed several times over. The snappiness of this device and it’s multi-tasking OS are amazing. I have made a list of pros and cons as well as software that I will keep updated.

    Here we go!

    Pros:

    1. Speedy interaction with basic apps and functions
    2. Easy to switch between apps, and back again
    3. Easily integrated music files from WMP and URGE (never thought I would say that!)
    4. simple workflows, easy to guess where to go next
    5. ActiveSync with push keeps me as updated as Good did (see below for more)

    Cons:

    1. From Microsoft
    2. no picture shares (wtf were they thinking)
    3. Doesn’t run Good all that well (a M$ conspiracy?)
    4. hard buttons are not easily programmed or changed from default
    5. can’t mute ringer after it starts ringing by pressing the volume buttons like on Treo 700p
    6. 240×240 screen (haven’t really noticed this one)
    7. no threaded SMS! (another wtf)

    1. PPCGeeks.com hack for adding picture share
    2. ThemeGeneratorX (what would my Treo be without an Emma theme)
    3. WEBIS toolbox for managing contact database cleanup and other cool stuff
