The Dahlonega area, once home to the Cherokee Indians, is the site of America’s first major Gold Rush ignited by the 1828 discovery of the purest gold in the world. Today’s visitors find the images of yesteryear as they stroll the historic public square, or travel the roads, trails, and rivers of the beautiful mountains and valleys of the surrounding area.
We headed up for the day and ate at the Smith House, a real southern treat! If you ever need a jump start on Southern cooking, start here. It’s a great family style restaurant, you sit down with other patrons and pass the dishes around as they come to the table. “We” enjoyed fried chicken, fried okra, roast beef, honey-baked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, collared greens, green beans, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, black-eyed peas, coleslaw, apple dumplings, cornbread, and southern banana pudding. I say “we” because Tina is rather picky and enjoyed the ham, mashed potatoes, and banana pudding. The banana pudding is not just mashed bananas of course, it has vanilla pudding, lemon wafer bars, bananas, and topped with meringue. I will be fasting the rest of the week.
After dinner we went to Amicalola Falls in Dawson County about 20 miles west of Dahlonega. At 600 feet they are the tallest falls east of the Mississippi, it’s name means Sliding Water in Cherokee. The falls rest on top of Amicalola mountain at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains. It was absolutely gorgeous, and the trail is made of rubber from recycled tires making the hike relatively easy. I received a package from FedEx today…it was my GPS. I have been taking the same way to work everyday, South on 400 to Lenox Road and 4 miles down Peachtree, afraid that if I tried to find a faster way I would only end up spending an hour driving around Atlanta. My pinpoint sense of direction stinks, I always know how to get around but I never know where I am going. The fact that the GPS was with us on the roadtrip was truly a God send, I doubt we would have made it out of California.

Thales really came through, with a 5 day turnaround, and including in the return box: batteries, power adapter for the car, and a computer serial cable. They really went above and beyond in repairing the GPS and never once questioned the validity of the repair. I worked for a company that did hardware repairs and we never repaired more than what was needed and making sure the warrenty was in place was always a hassle for the customer. My next GPS will certainly be from Magellan. The only thing missing is the OS X version of GPSy…come on guys we are waiting!

The cat will be alright…thanks for all the emails. The cat suffered a UTI and according to the vet “almost exploded” on Thursday. We pick the little fuzz ball up this morning, along with his new special “prescription” food.
Our pound of Tully’s espresso just arrived, and I can honestly say it is the best mocha we have ever had. Thank the Lord for the internet where you can move away from home and have pieces of it shipped to you. Speaking of shipped, we are still awaiting the arrival of our elusive furniture…hopefully to arrive next week! The air mattress is holding it’s own and the 14″ TV gets all the channels same as the big TV so it’s not too bad. So far Georgia has been a complete blast, and we look forward to more of the same all summer (with a couch however).
Tomorrow I start the new job, and it’s very exciting. I look forward to all the great things I have planned for Leading the Way, ironically enough the first item on tap is a content management system. There is still a huge gap in the market for a content management system, and after the failure of c dot c I have a pretty good idea of what not to do. One of the biggest holes in the plan for c dot c was the lack of portability, and free form of design. I am currently evaluating several open source solutions, and they run circles around the big three.
The weather here is still as pleasant as ever, with the occasional thunder storm, which I am a big fan of. It is about 80? and humid today, but more of the cool humidity than hot. Everyone keeps warning us not to get used to this weather because it is going to get “H-O-T”, but so far we have yet to be uncomfortable. Travelling though Louisiana probably prepared us though, now that was HOT! There are new pictures from the fourth posted in the gallery and more to come as I start my first week in Atlanta.
We had some crazy weather today. It cleared up in time for the celebration though, a great time!
