Single event effects (SEE) are individual events that occur when a single incident ionizing particle deposits enough energy to cause an effect in a device.

In space applications single event effects (SEE) are due to:

1. cosmic rays and

2. high-energy protons.

The SEEs from cosmic rays are primarily due to the heavy ion component of the particle flux. Protons can cause SEEs by direct ionization but more typically cause nuclear reactions, which create an indirect ionization effect.

Are you disappointed with the decision to keep the “aqua” X in 10.2? Well here’s a way to change at least the About Window to look a little more Jag-like. Download this file Jag X to your desktop. Then use these commands in the Terminal:

% sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Resources/AboutBox.tiff /Users/*username*/Pictures

% sudo mv /Users/*username*/Desktop/AboutBox.tiff /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Resources/AboutBox.tiff

Sit back and iChat your friends with a screenshot of your new and improved cat-like About Box. FWIW, command-shift-4 and space bar through the options until you get to the camera icon which will take a shot of your current window. Enjoy!

Emailchemy 1.4 converts email from many popular email applications to standard, portable formats, including RFC-822 mailboxes, comma-separated value files, and Apple’s Mail.app format. The new version adds an Entourage converter, a Neoplanet converter and wizard, an Outlook Express 5 for UNIX/Solaris converter and wizard, and an improved Outlook Express 5 for Macintosh converter. Emailchemy is $25 for Mac OS X, Unix/Linux, and Windows.

MFM is a program that will allow you publish and subscribe to your Internet Explorer favorites to and from a remote FTP site, iDisk or iPod. It was designed to keep all of your favorites together on whatever computers you work on, whether at home, work or on the road. Very cool stuff…no more switching browsers and your bookmarks are accessible anywhere!

If Then Software – My Favorite Martian

Having been on an OS X only diet (no Dell use at all, minus KaZaa) for a few weeks now I have three apps that are a must have for any connected user:

1) Gyaz Mail – this mail app rivals Apple’s app in almost every way. There are many things still coming, but this app may very well be the Claris Emailer for Mac OS X.

2) Chimera Navigator – If you are frustrated by Explorer, and are tired of seeing Windows users pages *pop* after they type in a URL, this is for you. Chimera Navigator is teh Cocoa based version of Netscape…translation: fast, fast, fast! It is still in beta and has some features like auto-fill that are lacking, but did I mention it was fast?

3) skHTML – If you can’t afford or are sick of the bloatware being produced by Macromedia and Adobe, check this simple solution out. It allows you to edit HTML and is adding some really cool features. Incidentally GoLive started as CyberStudio one of the coolest apps out there, it’s sad what happens when business practice dictates code.

I still use Apple Mail as my primary mail app, but as soon as Gyaz matures past Mail I will switch entirely!

As of writing this Chimera just released 0.6.
