Do you Yahoo? Not Anymore!

The company said it will begin charging for a feature that lets people check their Yahoo e-mail messages from outside services. In addition, the company will limit public access to its data storage service in hopes of persuading people to pay for it
About a week before this email went out I decided I was seeing too much SPAM in my inbox and so I reverted my Yahoo! email account back to web-based (no pop access). I specifically went through a made sure all my settings were changed as such, no offers, etc. A week later I recieved the email informing me that I could no longer check my email via POP access starting April 24th. I laughed it off at that point, as I had already made the switch…and none too soon.
MY parents on the other hand, who had already been screwed by the @home mail switch, were using Yahoo! more permanently (as I had done in the early days). Thus into our next problem:

Yahoo users will now automatically have their marketing preferences set to accept updates from a smattering of Yahoo’s businesses. Previously, users were offered one option to either accept or reject product notices when first registering on the site.
Users will have to click “no” to opt out of receiving e-mails from a selection of 13 Yahoo products, ranging from job listings to new media products to inclusion in Yahoo’s user surveys, among other things. The page also has an option for users to opt in to the Yahoo Delivers service, which sends product pitches from third parties.
What they fail to mention is the fact that if you opt-out of marketing (MANUALLY!) then you can no longer check your email via POP access regardless of the April 24th deadline. Now I am not sure if this procedure will change when the pay services take effect on April 24th, but I for one am not waiting around to find out. I have used Yahoo! for the last 5+ years and I am heavily reliant on a lot of their paid services: Bill Pay, and PayDirect to name a couple. As well as, everyone I ever met in the industry has ahalvor@yahoo.com as an email address. I cannot and will not be party to this crap.
I understand from Yahoo!’s point of view that they need to make money…and I have no problem with that. It is the underhanded way of going about it that gets me. I would rather use MSN where I know I have to check marketing preferences constantly, than Yahoo! who earns my trust only to destroy it in a week. I don’t have huge pull or anything, but I have signed more than my fair share of people of Yahoo!.
As of now I am cancelling ALL of my paid services with Yahoo!, and I soon as I get my Bill Pay set up on PayPal, I am gone.

1. If you could eat dinner with and “get to know” one famous person (living or dead), who would you choose? William Shatner…I love that guy! I think he is one of the coolest guys on the planet and has had a stellar career. Call me cheese, but he’s the man!
2. Has the death of a famous person ever had an effect on you? Who was it and how did you feel? Herb Caen. I read his column everyday since I was 12 and he was the first person, not related to me, that affected my life.
3. If you could BE a famous person for 24 hours, who would you choose? Pierce Brosnan…what a cool thing it would be, to be James Bond for 24 hours. (of course I would probably get him fired)
4. Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous? Who? I’ve been told that people recognize me all the time, but they can never place it. As far as famous, well, I am famous enough. 
5. Have you ever met anyone famous? I said Hi to Lars Ulrich in the Scandavian Store in Oakland last christmas. I ran into Robin Williams at the Oakland airport, and I got turned down for an autograph by Leonard Nimoy during the filming of Star Trek IV.

A show that starts off that good has to get cheesy right? It happened last week, and continued to dive this week. It’s like an episode of 90210 after Dylan came back…oh wait that was a FOX show too…pattern?

Now as we feel the worst is over for her the safe house is raided by the bad guys everyone is killed (except for her and Kim of course) and here is where is gets good: She takes off in the car, parks it on a cliff (with Kim inside) and it rolls off. For the Love of Pete, and if that isn’t the worst they can do, she collapes and when she wakes up she lost her memory.
Where are they taking us???…shows always do this! I thought this show would be the one (other than CSI) I could stomach every week. After all, 24 denotes there is only a season, so the writing should be spectacular as they only have to write one major story. How can you ruin that? It’s as if the first 10 episodes were written by hip new writers and the last 14 are being written by the out of work Melrose Place writers.
A note to Fox:
So this is obviously your biggest hit ever, and you are over selling commercial time. It extremely hard to get into what is left of the story when you break every 7 minutes for 10 minute commerical break. Get back to the basics, charge more for space and spend it on getting the first team of writers back.

XML/CSS Nightmares
You will probably see the site change a million times today. I am trying to nail down an issue I am having in IE 6:
When rolling over the right nav the bottom half of the page disappears. It is so wierd! It’s as if all of a sudden the css is telling the browser only the right length exists.
If anyone has seen this issue please let me know

Man is this cool stuff. Yahoo and Launch partnered to bring you customized radio. Basically you pick your favorite artists, from all genres, and they play them for you. The player itself is this very cool interactive page, it allows you to rate your songs being played and customizes the playlist for you on the fly.
For instance, if I have chosen Alternative and Moby comes on, I rate Moby a zero – it skips the song and never plays it again! What’s the facination with that freak anyway?
